30-Day Declutter Challenge: One Small Area a Day for a Fresh Start

November 8, 2026 · 3 min read

Big decluttering projects stall because they ask for whole weekends. This challenge asks for about 15 minutes a day. Each day targets one small, specific area, so you always know exactly what to do — and after 30 days, you'll have worked through nearly every corner of your home.

It's a perfect New Year project, but it works any month.

How it works

  • Set a 15-minute timer each day. Stop when it rings, even if you're mid-drawer.
  • Use four bags: keep, donate, trash and relocate. (The 5-step decluttering method explains why.)
  • Missed a day? Skip it or double up — there are no rules except keep going.
  • Donations go to the car every Sunday.

The 30-day list

Week 1: Quick wins

  1. Bathroom counter — clear it completely; put back only daily items
  2. Junk drawer — toss dead pens, old receipts and mystery keys
  3. Expired food — fridge and pantry
  4. Old cables and chargers — keep one per device you still own
  5. Mugs and cups — keep your favorites; donate the rest
  6. Food containers — recycle any without a matching lid
  7. Spices — toss anything that has lost its smell

Week 2: Personal spaces

  1. Medicine cabinet — for expired medicines, use a pharmacy take-back program or follow local disposal guidance
  2. Makeup and toiletries — toss old, separated or expired products
  3. Towels and linens — keep two sets per bed and two towels per person, plus a few spares
  4. Socks and underwear — anything with holes goes
  5. T-shirts — keep the ones you actually wear
  6. Shoes — donate pairs that hurt or you haven't worn in a year
  7. Coats and bags — one in, one out from here on

Week 3: Hidden clutter

  1. Nightstand — clear the top; edit the drawer
  2. Under the bed — pull everything out and decide
  3. Books and magazines — keep what you'll reread or reference
  4. Games, DVDs and media — check for missing pieces and discs
  5. Toys — do it together with your kids, if you have them (see our toy rotation guide)
  6. Outgrown kids' clothes — donate or pass them on
  7. Paperwork and mail — recycle, shred anything with personal details, file the rest

Week 4: The rest of the house

  1. Email inbox — unsubscribe from five newsletters you never read
  2. Phone — delete apps you don't use and screenshots you don't need
  3. Cleaning supplies — combine duplicates; dispose of old products according to their labels
  4. Laundry area — toss lone socks you've kept "just in case"
  5. Entryway — set up a drop zone
  6. Car — trash, receipts and that bag of things that should be in the house
  7. Hobby and craft supplies — keep what fits your current hobbies
  8. Holiday decorations — donate anything broken or unused for two seasons

Day 30: Celebrate

  1. Final walk-through — do a two-minute check of every room, drop off all donations and notice how different your home feels.

Tips to finish strong

Start with the easy days. Week 1 is designed to give you quick, visible wins to build momentum.

Don't buy storage yet. Wait until the challenge is over. You'll need much less than you think.

Track your progress. Tick off each day on a calendar or on the fridge. Our free 7-Day Home Reset printable includes a habit tracker you can use for the first week.

Keep it going. After 30 days, a weekly 15-minute declutter slot — like the Saturday slot in our weekly cleaning schedule — stops clutter from building back up.
